I enjoyed the Great Gatsby in 11th grade. I never thought several events could be created based on it, though.

I want to get you prepared and psyched up for Friday’s Bike to Work Day. Now, I fully intend to still use the Metro (hey, isn’t that green enough? wow, an unintended pun), but you should really think about donning your Prada suit top with some nice bike shorts, a huge helmet, and awesome sneakers. Don’t worry if you don’t have a bike, there is a great, FREE alternative. Read up and get excited:
Join thousands of area commuters for a celebration of bicycling as a clean, fun and healthy way to get to work! Meet up with your neighbors at one of 26 pit stops all over the region, ride into the city with experienced commuter convoys and meet your colleagues at Freedom Plaza. Washington Area Bicyclist Association and Commuter Connections invite you to try bicycling to work as an alternative to solo driving. Help the Washington region become a better place to ride. Bike to Work Day is a FREE event and open to all area commuters. Free Bike to Work Day t-shirts will available to the first 7,000 registrants who attend the pit stop they registered for (DC’s pit stop is Freedom Plaza). Companies can also win a bike rack valued at $1,050 (for 6 bikes)!
Don’t have a Bike? Bike and Roll will be offering free bike rentals for Bike To Work Day. Rentals can be picked up 5pm to 7pm the day before. For more information visit Bike and Roll or contact them directly at 202.842.2453. No excuses, then (unless you are me and are afraid of riding on the street with vehicles)!
Click below to learn how to register your bike in the National Bike Registry in the unfortunate event of a theft.
Call or Text the MPD’s 24/7 Anonymous Crime Tip Lines
Call 919-CRIME The Metropolitan Police Department now has a toll free crime tip line -1-888-919-CRIME. The tip line will be staffed by detectives 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Anyone who has information concerning a homicide, gangs, guns, or other violent offenses can call the anonymous tip line, and a detective will report all information. The toll-free number will also be displayed on L.E.D. boards in patrol cars throughout the District.
It is my pleasure to inform you of a couple of houses on sale in the U Street Corridor (I don’t even know the owners, so no commissions for me, just hopefully a little more equity if they get the price they’ve asked for!):
This renovated semi-detached house doesn’t look like anything incredible from the outside, but the pictures of the interior were actually not bad. I was surprised that this house was only a 2 bedroom, 1.5 bath, perhaps I thought it would have an extra bathroom. It does have a fireplace, patio, a little dining nook (very useful in these narrow rowhomes!), and a decent sized side yard, perfect for your garden (yard already has seem flower bushes). The house is just two (long) blocks from the U Street metro on 10th & U Streets. It is in a great location if convenience is your thing. I believe there was an open house yesterday, which was dreadfully rainy, so hopefully they will have another so you can make your full-price offer. Click here for more pics.
Sure, that’s a big sticker price, but you get 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms in a pretty spacious renovated row house in the U Street Corridor. It has a fireplace, a deck, private parking. It also has a rented separate apartment in the lower level. The upstairs unit is 3 BD/2.5 BA, not bad. That block is not too shabby and has some nice renovated homes and condos. If you have a million or so dollars to throw around, give this some consideration. Just think, how much would this house be in Georgetown? Click here to see the interior.
I didn’t have the opportunity to check out the 14&U Farmers’ Market on its opening day of its new season here at the corner of the Reeves Center and U Street (why can’t they stay open until at least 2 pm?… sheesh!). But, funny blogger, Herb of DC did, and he has some great pics and amusing commentary. Who knew the farmers’ market could be so political? Check out Herb’s post!
Looks like they have some good stuff, why oh why was I at the Columbia Heights’ Giant, then? I don’t quite get this rhubarb and strawberry pie thing that I keep hearing about.
This is so timely! I have been thinking about snitching for a little while, about bad neighbors and vacant property owners, but maybe it is okay and there won’t be any retaliation. The Peaceoholics, DC’s well-known peacemaking group, will be hosting a free event at the Lincoln Theatre with Anwar Glover from “The Wire” tomorrow, 5/13, at 6 pm. This looks like it could be a good event for any transitioning community, although I’m kind of paranoid already…
Peaceoholics Presents What’s Snitchin?, Tuesday, May 13, 2008, 6:00PM, Lincoln Theatre
Peaceoholics as part of the Rebuild the Village Month sponsor the “What’s Snitchin And What’s Not” Forum titled “Can the Police and Community really work together? If so how? If not why?” with Peaceoholics Co-founders Ronald Moten and Jauhar Abraham, HBO’s the “Wire” Star Anwar “Big G” Glover, Original LA Crip Rock Johnson, US Attorney’s Office Albert Herring, Metropolitan Police Department Assistant Chief Grooms, Former Delta Force member Lowell Duckett, and Former Harlem Drug King Pin Azie.
This is an exploration into discovering and defining the roles of community members and the Police department in establishing a trusting cohesive relationship, which would allow residents to feel comfortable assisting police in transforming their neighborhoods into safe, productive, and livable communities.
The Black Keys, the Ohio-based blues rock duo, will be performing at the 9:30 Club at 7:30 pm tonight and tomorrow, 5/13, with the Buffalo Killers. Cost is $25 (shows are sold out). The Black Keys have a newly released album called “Attack & Release.”
Local rock group the Wild Fictions will perform at the Black Cat at 9 pm tonight with Drew Danbury and Lode Runner. Cost is $8.
